Gibson Le Grande

 By Chris Swope

Here is a rare treasure from deep in our vaults.  Recently rediscovered, this is an uncirculated 2005 LeGrande from the Gibson Custom Shop.  The LeGrande is the modern equivelent of the Gibson Johnny Smith model which debuted in 1961.
A design that combined the 17" body of an L5 with the neck of a Super 400, at Johnny's request the guitar was first and foremost a true acoustic guitar that could be played electric with it's floating pickup engineered by Seth Lover expressly for this guitar.  The modern interpretation embodied in this LeGrande includes the upgrade of a BJB mini humbucker and the art-deco inspired "fingers" tailpiece.   This example bears an interior label signed by the late Jim Hutchins, who oversaw production of all carved tops at Gibson Custom Shop until he retired in 2007. It is a lovely, dark wine burst and is one of the classiest archtops ever made.
