Fender Masterbuilt 50s "Stealth Esquire" - John English
by Chris Swope
Here is a very special guitar from deep in our vaults. For your consideration: a 2006 Fender “Stealth” Esquire Masterbuilt by one of Fender’s finest; the late John English. This guitar had been hiding up in South Bend out of inventory for some time. It was recently uncovered and returned to the fold. What a sweet guitar! By all appearances this is an early fifties Esquire, aged to perfection in all it’s heavy relic glory. However, as you sweep through the positions on the 5-way switch!!?? wait a second………….. under the guard the mystery is revealed.
In addition to the bridge pickup are two custom, hand-wound single coil pickups that do a remarkable job from their under-the-guard hideaway. Fender first dreamed up the “stealth” idea with the Fender Marauder of the mid-sixties, but it never made it past the catalog shoot.
Fast forward to the modern age; as advances in technology made the B-2 bomber possible, similar advances in “stealth technology” pickup design have brought Leo’s Marauder vision to full fruition; bringing a wonderful mixture of strat and tele tones. Here is your chance to own a unique creation from one of Fender's most revered Master Builders, John English.
