70th Anniversary Gibson SJ-200 - Platinum Edition
by Jason Smith

Digging through our inventory, I was surprised to discovered we still have a couple of the ultra rare 70th Anniversary SJ-200s available. These guitars were an exclusive run made for GuitarSale. It is an extremely limited edition version of the "King of the Flattops" with total of only 12 ever made with Rosewood Back and Sides (plus an additional "One Off" with Quilted Maple). These guitars definitely fall into the category of "Extra Special".

Pre-War Style
The features are what really make this model stand out. It is based on the earliest SJ-200s and includes key pre-WWII features that later J-200s do not have:
  • Select Adirondack (Red) Spruce for the Top
  • Ebony Fingerboard and Moustache Bridge
  • Select Grade, Quarter Sawn Rosewood Back and Sides
It also has many unique cosmetic and custom features:
  • Traditional "Script" Gibson logo pearl inlay
  • Solid Platinum "70th" inlay at 19th fret (hand cut by Ren Ferguson)
  • Multiple bound headstock
  • Custom engraved "70th Anniversary" Truss Rod cover
  • Gold plated Grover Imperial (stair step) Tuning Keys
  • Pre-War style Sound Hole Rosette, Pickguard, and Sunburst Finish
  • Custom Engraved Brass Plate on the backside of headstock
  • Label hand signed by Gibson Master Luthier, Ren Ferguson
Since Platinum is the metal associated with a 70th Anniversary, we tried to think of a way to incorporate some of this precious metal into the Anniversary model.

Master luthier Ren Ferguson had the idea of hand cutting and inlaying solid platinum into the fretboard. He came up with an elegant "70th" logo to inlay by the 19th fret. Here are some shots of Ren cutting the platinum:

Ren colored the platinum during the cutting process so he could see what he was doing better. At $1,275 per ounce of pure platinum, he sure didn't want to make any mistakes cutting. Platinum is also one of the densest materials on earth, so I'm sure it was no picnic cutting the stuff!
The beautiful result was worth the effort! As you can also see in the photo, Ren also hand signed the interior label.

Adirondack Magic All of that is fine and good, but what about the sound? Let me tell you, these instruments sound glorious! SJ-200s are known to sound rich, full, and powerful, but these Adirondack/Rosewood models take it to a whole other level for me. These are the "Steinway piano" of guitars. The depth and clarity of the bass range is unmatched and the high-end sings like an angel. It sounds balanced throughout the full range and is truly inspiring to play. If you have been looking for an exceptional instrument with a great voice, sharp looks, and that is also rare and collectible, I highly recommend the 70th Anniversary SJ-200.
